A SUMMER PROGRAM TO HELP YOU LEARN TO LIVE A BALANCED LIFE

First Place 4 Health is a Christ-centered total wellness program that provides the support needed to help participants achieve emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual wellness.
Good health doesn’t start with healthy eating and regular exercise. The balanced life so many people long for—which includes good nutrition and physical fitness —begins with a change of heart and a transformed mind. The bible study book for the Summer First Place 4 Health program at St. Maria Goretti will be Motivated to Wellness, an all-new First Place 4 Health Bible study which invites members and participants to discover hope and motivation that will sustain them through a lifetime of fitness and good health.

Orientation for the Summer Session of First Place 4 Health, will be held in Room 10 of the Center at 7:00 PM on, Tuesday, May 22, 2012, and the first class will be held on Tuesday, June 5th. For additional information and/or to pre-register to attend orientation, call Alorea at 289-2247.

The purpose of the Wellness Ministry is to provide information and services to help parishioners and members of the New Orleans community live a healthy, balanced life.

The Wellness Ministry offers the First Place 4 Health Total Wellness and Weight Loss Program, a bible-based program designed to help participants learn to live a balanced life by placing Christ first in their lives.

Participants learn the basics of establishing healthy eating and exercise habits, developing one’s spiritual life, and techniques for maintaining one’s emotional health. There is no charge for participating in this twelve week program; however, participants must purchase a member’s kit and a bible study book in order to participate. Additional information about this bible- based health program can be obtained at www.firstplace4health.com.

In order to participate in the 2011 Winter Session, which begins the second week of February, one must attend an orientation class. Orientation classes will be held in Monsignor Gauthreaux Center on Sunday, January 30th at 10:00 AM and on Wednesday, February 2nd at 7:00 PM. The bible study for this session will be God’s Best for Your Life.  This bible study book, as well as a Member’s Kit for first time participants may be purchased from various sources.  A list of suppliers and costs will be available at orientation.

The Wellness Ministry currently offers 5 exercise classes to assist in the establishment of a regular exercise program.  The aerobic exercise class meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6:00 PM. The class is currently being led by certified personal trainer and certified group exercise trainer, Toya Layman, assisted by Herbert “Flip Smalls”. The forty-five minute class consists of aerobic, flexibility and strength training exercises. The yoga class meets on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 PM and Thursday mornings at 11:00 AM. The class is currently being led by long time yoga practitioner and certified instructor, Edna Stewart. The individualized exercise class for persons with limitations and/or persons looking for a less vigorous exercise routine is led by certified personal trainer and certified group exercise trainer. Herbert “Flip” Smalls.  The forty-five minute class consists of low impact aerobic exercises (many performed seated in chairs for those who prefer chair exercise), flexibility exercises and strength training.  Many of the exercises simulate everyday activities.

The Wellness Ministry also works with various health care and service organizations to provide programs to help individuals learn to manage chronic conditions. In 2009 and 2010 the Pontchartrain Chapter of The Links, Incorporated sponsored an eight week program aimed at helping reduce the incidence of heart disease in women. In 2010 we held the first session in our Men’s Health Series. Other sessions are being planned for 2011. In 2010 we also partnered with Morehouse School of Medicine and Excel to provide the ABCD program, a diabetes education program to help diabetics learn to control diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and depression. We also began a partnership with Peoples Health Program that brought the hugely popular Zumba for Seniors to Goretti.  Other events and health seminars are currently being planned with this healthcare group.

The Wellness Ministry sponsors an annual Health Fair, usually in the month of September. Thanks to the assistance of numerous health care providers in the City and the various organizations in the church, the Health Fairs have been very successful.  Additionally, the Wellness Ministry surveys the health needs of the parishioners annually in order to effectively plan activities to assist parishioners and residents of New Orleans pursue a healthy lifestyle.

On Tuesday, February 1, 2011, the Wellness Ministry resumes its referral program.  Individuals needing information concerning the availability of health care and/or information related to other wellness issues may come to the Center on Tuesday evenings between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM and meet with members of the Wellness Ministry, including the church nurse and/or the church nutritionist.  The members of the Wellness Ministry will be located in the office immediately adjacent to the meeting room used by the St. Vincent De Paul Society.

The Wellness Ministry welcomes suggestions for improving the services and programs being offered.  We also invite persons interested in becoming members of the Wellness Committee to contact us by calling the church office or by sending an e-mail to ldavis@smgnola.com
